Statement on ‘Motion on Peace’ to Council – Councillor Joanna Wright

Dear Members of the Bath and North East Somerset Council,

I would like to formally address the proposed peace motion, led by the Green Group and intended as a cross-party initiative encompassing all political groups within our esteemed Council.

This motion seeks to expresses deep sympathy for all individuals affected by the ongoing conflict in Israel and Palestine on behalf of B&NES council. To those within the Bath and North East Somerset area grappling with the repercussions of this conflict, we extend our heartfelt support during these challenging times.

We share our hope for an immediate release of all hostages and an urgent ceasefire to enable the unimpeded delivery of aid and foster the potential for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Furthermore, this motion firmly enforces that individuals of all faiths and those who identify with none should feel safe and supported worldwide. We vehemently condemn the escalating instances of antisemitic and Islamophobic violence and abuse within the United Kingdom.

To address these concerns, the Council hereby resolves to:

1. Through the Equalities Action Commission, thoroughly explore how the Council can enhance its support and facilitation of events that bring together individuals of all faiths and none. These gatherings will provide a platform for expressing solidarity and shared sorrow in response to the current events.

2. Extend appropriate support to any local resident who requires assistance because of the violent events transpiring in the Israel-Palestine conflict.

3. Condemn the use of all dehumanising language and strongly urge our communities to treat each other with respect. We call upon individuals to refrain from using inflammatory terms to describe either the Palestinian or Israeli populations, recognising the sensitivity of the situation and the need for empathy during this time of crisis.

In adopting this resolution, the Bath and North East Somerset Council reaffirms its commitment to fostering inclusivity, understanding, and support for all residents, regardless of their faith or cultural background.

Thank you for your attention and dedication to promoting peace and harmony within our community.
